Many people know of our Château Plaisance and La Fleur Plaisance Grand Crus, but often don’t realize that we produce another Grand Cru. Our 2010 Vieux Château des Moines Saint Emilion Grand Cru just received a 91 score!
We proposed it during the barrel tastings this past March along with our well known Chateau Plaisance St. Emilion Grand Cru which also received a 91 rating.
Our wines receive their names from the land in which their vines are located. France, as you know does not break down into states and counties as in the USA. France can be sub-divided by region, then department, then commune, and finally into sectors. Sector Moines Vieux is in Saint-Émilion, which is a commune in the Gironde Department in the Aquitaine region in south-western France.
Our vines in sector Moines Vieux are adjacent and directly West of our home. Vieux Château des Moines translates into English as the “Castle of the Old Monks”. I shared with you in a previous blog that this commune is named after the monk Emilion who sought refuge here in the 8th century. It was the monks who followed him that started up the commercial wine production in the area.
We believe that with a name so steeped in the roots of this area, along with the praise that the critics have given it, Vieux Château des Moines should be the next of our wines that you should explore.
