Our great team of workers

Our great team of workers

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

This past Thursday we were informed that the wood chipper would be ready for us to use on Friday April 16th. Our crew of seasonal workers had already done a full weeks work and were anticipating to have Friday off. I asked them if they would work another full day since the machine was arriving and we had 50 more rows of wood to pull in our Bordeaux superior vines. All of them came and we did it. A heart felt “thanks” to each of them individually.

Here we are at 8 am beginning one of the many rows. A vineyard worker in a purple hoodie works down a row of vines in the early morning. Each worker pulls the pruned wood from the 2 lines. In this photo you can see three workers doing 6 rows. A wide vineyard view showing three small figures of workers spread across the vineyard rows, demonstrating the scale of the pruning operation. We keep our bodies in motion and get a full work out.

Here is Bahijah, our newest worker. A person in light-colored clothing working in a vineyard row, bending down to collect pruned wood from between the vine rows.Sanna is the one with the biggest smile and loves to sing.A smiling vineyard worker in dark clothing standing among bare vine rows with collected pruned wood, showing the positive spirit of the team.

Now the rows are done. Long rows of bare grapevines stretching into the distance with neat grass pathways between them, showing the completed pruning work. Our senior worker arrives in the tractor to chip the wood into sawdust. A red tractor with an operator visible in the cab, positioned among vineyard rows with pruned wood ready for chipping. Finally the crew can be off until Monday.

At the moment our workers represent 5 different nationalities. Despite the many languages we get the jobs done without any problems. Each person is important and appreciated. We relish our uniqueness and strive for one goal, for us the end result is great wine.
