Ripping Leaves

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

A diverse group of nine temporary workers standing together in a line in front of a vineyard at Château Plaisance, smiling for a group photo.

This is the crew of temporary workers brought in for selective leaf removal. By removing the leaves from the lower east side of the vines, the grapes have better ventilation. On the west side of the vines, the clumps of grapes stay protected by the remaining leaf canopy offering them protection from the intense afternoon sun. Unfortunately we, that work in the vines, have no chance of shade until our work day is done.

A vineyard row at Château Plaisance showing the results of selective leaf removal, with grape clusters more visible and vines properly ventilated.
